Meet Soraya Mohamed, the ‘Basketball Queen of Egypt’

Soraya Mohamed is a 24-year-old Egyptian basketball star who’s now being called the ‘New Queen of Egypt’. At the age of eight, she began playing tennis and basketball at Egypt’s Shooting Club, and later decided to focus on basketball, joining the Ahly Basketball Team.

After a coach told her that she’s going to be a star one day, she took it from there and wanted to explore what the future held for her.

A few days ago, Mohamed was named among the ten women who defined 3×3 in 2019 by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

When she was fifteen years old, she joined the Egyptian National Team and was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in Africa in 2011 and 2012.

“I’m very proud of myself and of what I’ve achieved so far. 2019 was my favorite year in terms of playing basketball. I received two very special titles; Top Scorer and the MVP of the FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup 2019,” said Mohamed.

Mohamed was the first Egyptian to receive the title of Top Scorer in an African cup. She attributed these achievements to her supportive teammates, the commendation of the FIBA, and her supportive and encouraging parents.

“Move over Cleopatra, there is a new queen of Egypt”, was what FIBA posted about her, following Egypt’s victory over Mali at the FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup in November 2019.

“I owe it all to my parents who supported me all the way, and to every coach who encouraged and guided me throughout these years.

She hopes to take part in the Olympic Games and the World Cup with the national team, one day.

We said this: Congratulations, Soraya!
