Long before Hollywood became obsessed with Greek mythology, Ancient Egypt had a whole pantheon of gods, epic stories, magical creatures, and legendary rulers that have inspired filmmakers for decades. Some productions stay closer to Egyptian history; others take… let’s just say creative liberties. But whether it’s Marvel, sci-fi, fantasy, or even comedy, they all prove one thing: Egyptian mythology deserves way more screen time.
Here are five titles that helped shed some light on Ancient Egypt’s myths.
1. Moon Knight
Marvel finally gave Egyptian mythology its superhero moment.
Oscar Isaac plays Steven Grant, an ordinary museum gift shop employee who discovers he’s sharing a body with mercenary Marc Spector—the chosen avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian moon god.
Instead of treating Ancient Egypt as just a cool aesthetic, Moon Knight actually builds its story around the Ennead, the powerful Egyptian gods who can only influence Earth through human avatars. Suddenly, gods like Khonshu, Ammit, and Taweret become central characters rather than background decorations.
What makes the series even more special is everything happening behind the camera. It was directed by Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab, Marvel’s first Arab director, who worked to bring Egyptian voices, locations, and talent into the story. It’s one of the rare Hollywood productions that lets Egypt tell part of its own mythology.
2. Gods of Egypt
If you’re here for giant gods, impossible battles, and pure fantasy, this one’s for you.
The film follows Bek, a mortal thief who teams up with Horus after Set, the god of chaos and darkness, steals Egypt’s throne and throws the kingdom into turmoil.
The movie takes Egyptian mythology and turns everything up to eleven. Gods transform into massive armored warriors, fly across the skies, battle through the heavens, and journey into the afterlife in visually over-the-top fashion.
Is it historically accurate? Not really. Is it an entertaining fantasy inspired by Egyptian mythology? Absolutely.
3. Waraqat Shafrah
Who says mythology can’t be funny?
This Egyptian comedy follows three young men searching for an ancient artifact believed to have been hidden in Egypt centuries ago after being taken from Jerusalem.
Instead of gods fighting across the heavens, Waraqat Shafrah mixes treasure hunting, history, and plenty of laughs, proving that Ancient Egypt can inspire adventure stories that don’t always have to take themselves too seriously.

4. El Kenz
Part historical epic, part modern mystery, El Kenz jumps across different eras of Egyptian history.
The present-day story follows Egyptologist Hassan Bishr, who returns to Luxor after receiving a mysterious letter from his uncle. He soon discovers recordings and ancient papyrus manuscripts left behind by his father, each revealing clues to a hidden treasure.
One of those stories takes us back to Queen Hatshepsut, who claims the god Amun-Ra is her true father to legitimize her reign as pharaoh. By weaving mythology into real Egyptian history, El Kenz reminds us how closely faith, politics, and legend were intertwined in Ancient Egypt.
5. Stargate
What if Ancient Egypt… but make it aliens?
Stargate begins with a mysterious portal discovered in Egypt that transports a team of explorers to another planet, where humans live under the rule of Ra—a powerful being worshipped as the Egyptian sun god.
The film blends archaeology, mythology, and science fiction into one of Hollywood’s most iconic cult classics. Sure, it swaps divine powers for extraterrestrials, but it still borrows heavily from Egyptian mythology, symbols, gods, and architecture to build its universe.
Whether it’s Moon Knight reclaiming Egyptian mythology through Egyptian creators, Gods of Egypt embracing full-on fantasy, Stargate throwing aliens into the mix, or Waraqat Shafrah finding comedy in ancient legends, one thing’s clear: Egyptian mythology has endless stories waiting to be explored.
Maybe it’s time it got just as much attention as Greek mythology.
