Karim Abdel-Aziz’s “WE” Ad Just Got Banned For Being Racist Towards Africans
The Supreme Council for Media Regulation decided to ban the broadcast of WE Telecom Egypt’s viral TV advertisement. Karim Abdelaziz was starring in a series of TV ads for WE Telecom Egypt with the theme of searching for “Gad3ana”, one of the traits Egyptians are known for, with the message that it only exists in Egypt.
The President of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, Makram Mohamed, decided to ban the African edition of the ad series for being racist towards Africans. In the official announcement, the Council confirmed that the ad will harm the Egyptian-African ties that the Egyptian Diplomacy is working hard to fix and maintain.
According to Misr5, the ad was suspended after a complaint that was presented by Ambassador Khaled Amara, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and Director of the Department of African Translations.
