In Pictures: Treasuring Yemen’s Incredible Fisheries Sector
Yemen has long been suffering from a humanitarian crisis, political chaos, and a crumbling economy, especially in the fisheries sector. According to the FAO organization, “The fisheries sector is considered to be the third in order of importance in Yemen’s economy. Its total contribution to the country’s GDP is approximately 15%. It is estimated that more than 220 000 people depend on fishing as their principal source of income.” Adding the never-ending struggles that have been dragging the country downhill, Saudi Arabia’s Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen just launched a project to support the fisheries sector by distributing 100 modern fishing boats among the local fishermen in different Yemeni governorates.
This thoughtful initiative reminded us of how incredible Yemen’s fisheries actually are, so scroll down to appreciate this country’s national aquaculture sector.
