Early Activism and Arrests

Jarrar has been at the forefront of Palestinian activism, consistently fighting for human rights and the liberation of Palestine. 1989 marks her first arrest after attempting to protect her sister from detention during an International Women’s Day protest.

Over the years, Jarrar faced numerous arrests, particularly under Israel’s administrative detention policy, which allows individuals to be held without charge or trial.

Educating Women in Her Time in Prison

Jarrar’s commitment to human rights and feminist causes didn’t falter during her time in prison.

There, she helped establish an educational initiative for young female prisoners, teaching English to empower them after their release. Her fight in prison is a testament to her belief that “there will be an accumulation of efforts that will lead to change” and her insistence on being a great part of it.

A Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council

Jerrar was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council, which acts as parliament, in 2006. She was appointed to lead the prisoners’ committee. In this role, she advocated for the rights of Palestinian prisoners, working to ensure better conditions and legal support for those incarcerated.

The committee focused on monitoring detentions, raising awareness about prison conditions, and advocating for the release of political prisoners.

Khalida Jerrar’s Incarceration in 2023

Jarrar’s repeated arrests reflect the ongoing repression faced by Palestinian activists. Most recently, in December 2023, she was detained and held in solitary confinement for six months.

She had described her time in prison in one of her letters, saying, “I die every day. The cell is like a small, closed box that no air enters.” Jerrar’s release after the ceasefire is a chance for her to heal and take in the well-deserved fresh air.
