From Bedouin Feasts to Ancient Catacombs: Unique Outings Beyond Sahel
Throughout our North Coast stay, we usually like to stick to Sahel outings, whether it’s a party at Kiki’s or chilling at Marassi’s Marina. The thing is, over time, it is easy to get bored of the same outings repeated again and again.
To freshen up your Sahel stay, these are our out-of-the-box outing ideas that go beyond the North Coast:
Dine Ala Bedouin Style at Wahet Khatab
Picture rows upon rows of massive red tents housing low-lying seats. That is exactly the type of vibe you get to experience at Wahet Khatab at Borg El Arab. This special outdoor restaurant specializes in authentic Bedouin food served at their traditional Arabian majlis seating.
They also have table seating in the middle of their expansive courtyard to suit all preferences. Above the courtyard are fairy lights that light up the moment the sun sets, setting a warm glow across the courtyard.
When it comes to the food, you’ll get to enjoy everything from their spicy one-pot mbakbaka (a Libyan tomato-based noodle recipe) to their camera (special beef with onions).
Experience Authentic Alexandrian Seafood at Asmak El Shabory
If Bedouin food is not your cup of tea, you can instead go for a crowd favorite among Alexandrians: seafood. Nestled along Alexandria’s Portside, known as the Max, are a string of restaurants specializing in fresh, handpicked seafood.
Our favorite has to be Asmak El Shabory. At this seafood restaurant, you are immediately directed to a fish counter where a variety of freshly caught seafood sits atop mounds of crushed ice.
From bouri fish to orange-hued shrimp, you pick your seafood and then decide how it will be cooked. The options are endless: grilled, roasted with lemon and oil, or fried. Then, you get seated inside and dig into your seafood feast.
Spike Up Your Adrenaline at Maamoura’s Amusement Park
Going out isn’t just about getting a bite to eat. You’ll also want to get your body moving, and that is when you can hit up Maamoura’s amusement park.
Despite Sahel being the ongoing hotspot for vacationers across Egypt, Al-Maamoura once used to hold a special place among many vacationers. From bike rides along its massive roads to corniche walks, it was the ultimate escape spot.
One of its most promising experiences is its amusement park, a place not for the faint-hearted, as its rides are all about pushing you to your limit. From their 360-degree spinning rides to insane drop towers, these rides will have your head spinning and your heart beating for hours!
Travel Back In Time At Memorial German Military El Alamein
For history buffs, you can travel back in time to the gory days of WWI and WWII. At the Memorial German Military, a cemetery conceals 4,213 German soldiers from WWII and thirty German soldiers from WWI. Along with the burial ground is a special hermetically sealed sandstone fortress that overlooks the sea.
To the right of the entrance is a small chapel where families and friends honor the dead with wreaths. This is the place to go for a taste of history along the Mediterranean.
Get Underground At the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa
Discovered by accident in 1900 when a donkey fell into a 30-meter hole, the Kom El Shoqafa Catacombs combine the three top ancient civilizations: Greece, Rome, and Egypt.
To enter this catacomb, you must travel down its depth of 30 meters, where you’ll experience a significant drop in temperature compared to the hot summer air of Alexandria.
Once you get down there, you’ll see more than 300 side openings that used to house mummies that are now scattered all over the world, statues and carvings of mythical figures like Medusa, and a funeral banquet hall.
With each of these activities, you’ll get to escape from the typical Sahel outings of parties and fancy dinners and instead opt for more out-of-the-box experiences within and outside the North Coast.
