After its passenger-free inauguration in November 2025 captured the attention of Cairo’s commuters, the new Cairo Monorail is set to begin operations before the end of the month. Imagine bypassing traffic and traveling from the bustling streets of Nasr City to the emerging New Administrative Capital in just 60 minutes. This fast, affordable, and convenient mode of transportation is here to change the way Cairo’s citizens commute. Here’s what to expect.
Mobility Between Cairo & Emerging Cities
To cover Cairo and its surrounding cities, the Cairo Monorail consists of two lines: The East Nile and the West Nile. The East Nile Line will intersect with Cairo Metro Line 3 at Stadium Station. It runs 54KM between the New Administrative Capital and East Cairo and consists of 22 stations. The West Nile Line will intersect with Cairo Metro Line 3 at the Nile Valley Station. It runs 42KM between the 6th of October City and Giza Governorate and consists of 12 stations.

Advanced Features & Driverless Technology
Built by an alliance of Alstom, Orascom Construction, and Arab Contractors, the monorail will be the first driverless monorail in Africa. It will be controlled from a central hub in the NAC and will be equipped with cameras, sensors, advanced security systems, means of communication with the control room, and a fire safety system.

Reduced Travel Time
The project aims to optimize travel time, targeting 60 minutes for The East Line and 42 minutes for The West Line. Powered entirely by electricity, the train will reach a speed of 80KM per hour and aims to transport over 600K passengers daily.

Affordability Compared to Cars
Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport in Egypt, Kamel El-Wazir, revealed that the ministry is still studying ticket prices, confirming that the fare will be valued at less than half the cost of fuel needed to travel the same distance.

An Environment-Friendly Alternative
The monorail operates on clean energy, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to sustainability and a greener future. Its introduction will help reduce carbon emissions caused by motor vehicles and significantly improve air quality in Cairo.
The Monorail marks a major shift in transportation. As a more efficient alternative to road travel, it helps reduce traffic and air pollution, lowers commuting costs, and saves time. Seamlessly intersecting with Cairo’s metro, the monorail connects emerging areas while conserving resources, making it a remarkable step towards a smarter future.
