Dubai’s New Brewery, A Heineken Creation, Gives Room for Debate

By Malak Khaled

Intending a more cosmopolitan and touristic approach, Dubai is to welcome a new brewery in town by the end of 2027. The project is a partnership between Heineken and Maritime Mercantile International.

It has already secured all the necessary permits. The project will begin in late 2025 and will take place in Dubai Industrial City.

This is not the first brewery to hit the UAE’s market, or the Middle East for a fact, but it is the biggest of its kind. Heineken is considered the world’s second-biggest beer producer. Some of the brands included under its umbrella are Kingfishes, Birra Moretti, and Amstel.

The Controversy: How the Internet Is Reacting

The opening of Heineken’s brewery in Dubai has stirred controversy, sparking a range of opinions.

Liberation in the Middle East

Questions of what would ensue for the region arise, in addition to opinionated talk about the brewery. Some people perceived the new Heineken brewery as a mark of progress and liberation in the Middle East. For them, it also calls for a celebration of the drop in beer prices to come in Dubai as a result of local production.

What About Culture and Religion?

Some expressed concern that Dubai is prioritizing economic growth over religious values, seeing the brewery’s opening as a move toward Westernization in the Middle East.

As the project moves forward, it will undoubtedly continue to shape conversations about Dubai’s development and its balance between tradition and modernization.
