Credit to the Artist: Qarm Qart’s Surreal Visions of Cairo

Amidst the chaos, traffic, and pollution of Cairo’s streets, artists still manage to see the city’s hidden beauties. Italian artist, teacher and writer, Carmine Cartolano, has taken it upon himself to turn the Egyptian capital into a surreal yet pleasing landscape.

Known as Qarm Qart, Cartolano has been living in Egypt since 1999 and speaks Egyptian slang as fluently as a local. The expatriate taught Italian at the Italian Cultural Institute, in addition to giving classes at the Don Bosco Institute.

Cartolano’s work is clearly influenced by his stay in Egypt. His photoshopped images of Hollywood’s biggest stars on Egyptian buildings have garnered much attention on social media this week. It truly gives you a perspective of Cairo’s potential if artists were given a chance to decorate the city in their own image.

Carmine Cartolano released three books: Momo, Masriyano, and Horreya. His stories tackle some of the most crucial issues Egyptians are facing such as sexual harassment and poverty.
