Controversy at Al Aqsa: Plans for Jewish Synagogue Raise Concerns

Is one of the holiest sites on Earth under threat? Al Aqsa Mosque in the old city of Jerusalem has become the site of major controversy and debate. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has plans to build a synagogue within the holy Al Aqsa Mosque, a notion that sparked outrage amongst many.

Egypt’s Attack

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Egypt made it clear that Israel is legally responsible for “upholding the status quo at Al-Aqsa Mosque” as well as safeguarding it.

Egypt insists that Israel has a responsibility to stop any provocative statements or plans related to holy sites in Palestinian territories. Egypt also emphasized that such controversial actions will only complicate efforts to achieve a ceasefire.

Al Azhar’s Response

Known as the largest religious institution in Egypt, Al Azhar was shocked to learn about Ben-Gvir’s plans and immediately condemned the excessive and provocative ‎statements.

To them, the plans issued by Ben-Gvir are ones that stem from “an ‎extremist mentality that does not respect religions, the ‎sanctities of others, or international laws and convention.”

Beyond their outrage at the plans, they wanted the entire Muslim world to also be angry, and that is why they are asking the Muslim community to take a ‎firm stance against Ben-Gvir’s excessive statements about building a synagogue in Aqsa.

Why Is The Mosque So Special?

Al Aqsa Mosque stands tall as one of the holiest Islamic sites. It is not only the first of two Qiblas, but it is also linked to Prophet Muhammed’s divine night journey, during which he traveled from Medina to Masjid Al Aqsa in Jerusalem, prayed, and then ascended to heaven to meet God.

Seeing as how the mosque holds such significance in the Muslim community, building a synagogue within its walls will only Judaize the ‎historical landmarks of Al-Aqsa Mosque, a concept that many are fighting against.
