Art Therapy Sessions at Sufi Bookstore

The unconscious is a very interesting part of the psyche. The term was originally invented by Sigmund Freud to describe a state of mind that is not acquainted with consciousness. All humans are driven by their unconsciousness in one way or another, but it’s not always easy to make sense of how it works.

I’m sure many of you constantly sit there, doodling and sketching out weird designs that don’t necessarily mean anything. Whether it’s a curvy line, sharp angle or a scratch out of a house, it will always have a certain and honest meaning that relates to you.

Art therapy has not been widely accepted by our culture. I think the word “therapy” could come off as an insult to some families, since Egyptians enjoy putting labels on everything. What’s even more sad is that people don’t realize the simplicity of such an activity, and how much it could help in expressing suppressed feelings. I mean, with all the chaos the country is going through, I’m sure many people have so much to express. Art therapy is all about the interaction between the art and the self. It is an artistic creation that has been invented to support one’s identity, while reducing any focus on verbalization. What better ways are there to express?

Sufi, an artsy bookshop in Zamalek, usually holds art therapy sessions every Sunday. But THIS Sunday, May 6th, they will be having an open studio session, where people could come in anytime between 5:00 and 9:00 PM to paint and get an individual (or joint) analysis of their pieces.

WE SAID THIS: Reducing Verbalization? See You There!
