A Famine & Cholera Pandemic: A Look At How 17.7 Million Sudanese Are Starving
On April 15, a war broke out in Sudan’s capital city of Khartoum between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that is going on until this moment. These eight months of conflict have led to major destruction to the Capital of Sudan, displaced, and starved civilians under physical and sexual violence by RSF. According to WHO reports, there are 24.7 million people in need of critical humanitarian assistance in Sudan.
The United Nations raised the alarm on Tuesday, December 19 over fighting near the only safe space in Sudan ‘Wad Madani’ in Al Jazira state that shelters more then 700,000 who are internally displaced.
Now most of Sudanese states is contaminated with diseases and pandemics like Cholera, while more than 70% of hospitals in conflict areas are out of service. The war between the two military groups has put 19 million children out of school, and left 4.9 million suffering from food insecurity. This is in addition to the cholera cases that increased by 136% since last month. According to UN, 6939 cases of Cholera so far have been reported. Moreover, there are serious concerns regarding women facing sexual violence. Currently Sudanese women fear rape and are on the hunt for contraceptive pills all across the country.
