With rumors swirling that Karim Abdel Aziz and Mona Zaki could be teaming up for a new film, it feels like the perfect excuse to take a little trip down memory lane. Because before they became two of Egypt’s biggest stars, they had already built a pretty memorable on-screen history together — from young romance and chaotic love stories to espionage and one very unexpected historical cameo.
So, if you’ve forgotten just how good this duo was, here’s a reminder.
Their First Movie Together: Idhak Al Sora Tetlaa Hilwa
It all started with Idhak Al Sora Tetlaa Hilwa, where Mona Zaki plays Tahani, a young woman who moves to Cairo to study medicine and finds herself navigating a completely different social world. Karim Abdel Aziz plays the son of businessman Tariq Ezz El-Din, and naturally, a romance develops between the two.
It was their first time sharing the screen, and honestly, not a bad place to start.
Leh Khaletny Ahebak: When Love Gets Complicated
In this one, things get a little more emotionally messy. Mona plays Dalia, who gives up on her relationship with Hisham, played by Karim. He eventually decides to move on, returning to their friendship and getting involved with another woman, Noha.
Of course, because this is a movie about people who clearly have not learned the art of simply communicating, feelings start getting complicated all over again.
Abu Ali: Love, Crime & A Lot of Trouble
Next came Abu Ali, where Karim plays Hassan, a struggling man who turns to theft to provide for his family. While fleeing the authorities, he crosses paths with Salma, played by Mona Zaki, who is also on the run from an abusive situation at home.
What follows is basically one problem after another — false accusations, danger, unexpected twists and, somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, a pretty intense love story between Hassan and Salma.
Classic Karim and Mona: put them in the middle of absolute mayhem and somehow make us root for the romance.
Welad El-Amm: The Spy Thriller Era
Then came Welad El-Amm, and suddenly the duo was nowhere near a fluffy romance.
Mona plays Salwa, an Egyptian woman who discovers that her husband is actually a Mossad agent working for Israel. He takes her and their children to Israel against her will, leaving her desperate to get back to Egypt. Enter Karim as Mostafa, an Egyptian intelligence agent sent to help bring her home.
The two are thrown into a tense espionage story filled with danger, secrets and one very high-stakes mission — proving that this pairing could work just as well in a thriller as it could in a romance.
El Sett: A Very Different Kind of Reunion
Their most unexpected pairing came in El Sett, the film about Umm Kulthum’s life, following her journey from a young girl to the legendary singer whose death brought the entire country to a standstill.
Mona Zaki takes on the role of Umm Kulthum, while Karim appears as a guest of honor as Sharif Sabri Pasha, the brother of Queen Nazli and uncle of King Farouk. His character becomes part of a pivotal chapter in Umm Kulthum’s story, including a relationship that adds another layer to her personal and artistic journey.
It’s a very different kind of collaboration from their earlier films, but it still puts two of Egypt’s most recognizable actors in the same story — this time with a little history attached.
So… Are We Getting Another Karim & Mona Movie?
From their first on-screen romance to crime, espionage and historical drama, Karim Abdel Aziz and Mona Zaki have managed to keep finding completely different ways to play off each other.
And if the rumors about another movie together turn out to be true, we’d be over the moon. After all, it has been a while, and clearly, this duo still has a few genres left to conquer. Here’s hoping this one makes it from rumor to reality!
