A Keffiyeh for Christmas: Pope’s Nativity Scene Calls for Peace in Gaza
By Islam Salah
This year’s nativity scene at the Vatican carries a powerful message of peace, as Pope Francis unveiled a depiction of baby Jesus wrapped in a Palestinian keffiyeh. The scene, presented in St. Peter’s Square, reflects the Pope’s ongoing calls for peace in the Middle East, especially amid the continuing violence in Gaza.
A Peaceful Message in Troubling Times
The nativity scene is more than just a religious display; it’s a statement of solidarity. Baby Jesus, traditionally shown in humble circumstances, is seen here wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh, a symbol of Palestinian identity and the long-standing struggle for peace and justice in the region.
This subtle yet striking addition captures the essence of Pope Francis’ message for the world: enough with the wars, enough with the violence!
Crafted with Love and Tradition
The nativity scene was created by talented Palestinian artists from Bethlehem, renowned for their skill in crafting delicate figures from olive wood. The scene features a traditional Bethlehem Star with the inscription “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill to all people” in both Latin and Arabic.
This inscription serves as a reminder of the universal message of Christmas—peace and goodwill for all.
The figures of the Holy Family, also carved from olive wood, add a touch of authenticity and reverence to the display.
Collaboration for Peace
The creation and presentation of the nativity scene were made possible through collaboration with key Palestinian organizations, including the Palestinian Presidential Committee for Church Affairs and the Palestinian Embassy to the Vatican.
Dar Al-Kalima University and the Beitcharilo Center also contributed, highlighting the deep ties between the Vatican and Palestine.
This partnership shows the broader significance of the nativity scene, which is about more than just a Christmas tradition. It is a call for peace and a reminder of the hardships faced by the Palestinian people.
A Symbolic Gesture
During the unveiling, Pope Francis also led a mass for peace, reinforcing the need for unity and compassion in the face of division.
As the Pope continues to advocate for peace, especially in conflict-ridden areas like Gaza, this scene stands for the shared humanity that binds us all together.
