In Pictures: Dubai Expo 2020 to Get a New Technology Neighborhood Called ‘District 2020’
The first world exposition in the Middle East was supposed to take place this month in Dubai but was unfortunately delayed due to the global pandemic and instead it’s now set to take place between October 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022. The Expo site, which is located south of Dubai, show pavilions that are almost completed and ready to welcome up to 25 million visitors, as more than 190 countries were expected to actually be represented at the Expo’s six-months long event.
Billions of dollars have been poured into the 1,000-acre project and the infrastructure throughout the whole city, which, by the way, will outlive the event itself. Therefore, Dubai is currently reusing 80% of Expo infrastructure to develop part of the site into a commercial and residential smart city ‘District 2020‘.
District 2020, that’s currently being built by a German tech company, will be the hub for testing the latest in technologies. In a statement, Nadimeh Mehra, vice president of the District 2020 transition unit said “District 2020 aspires to become a testbed for new technologies and innovations,” and added, “We see that companies want to be involved in the development of cities they are occupying and that type of solution-oriented collaboration mindset is truly a game-changer”.
