Did Egypt’s Mahraganat Stars Really Just Get Banned From Performing in the Country?
Iconic Singer and President of the Egyptian Musicians’ Syndicate, Hany Shaker, just released an announcement that bans cafes, clubs, hotels, and boats from booking and dealing with Mahraganat singers. The announcement also states that legal action will be taken towards any venue that doesn’t follow accordingly.
In a phone call with Amr Adib, Hany Shaker also named some of the people who’ll be banned, like Mohamed Ramadan, Hassan Shakosh, Omar Kamal, Oka w Ortega, Shehta Karika, Figo El Dakhlawy, Kozbara, and Hangara.
This came after mahraganat songs were under fire recently, as Shakoosh and Omar Kamal’s Bint El Giran were performed in the Cairo Stadium for thousands to see live. The song includes a part where they mention drinking alcohol and smoking hash which created a lot of controversy.
Although Tamer Hosny convinced Shakoosh and Omar Kamal to change the lyrics of the song, and although they apologized to everyone online, the syndicate insisted on banning the entire genre.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Ramadan is facing a huge backlash from people after the updates of his case with the Egyptian pilot that got suspended. In Amr Adib’s phone call, Hany Shaker made it clear that Mohamed Ramadan is among those banned because his lyrics are often questionable and inappropriate and because he performs topless on stage.
The issue has sparked so much controversy that we decided to take to the streets and see what people had to say on the matter. Watch our impromptu street interview and tell us what you think in the comments!
