Egypt Announces National Plan to Eliminate AIDS By 2030
In official statements issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UNAIDS, Egypt now has one of the lowest HIV infection rates worldwide after it reached 0.02 percent. The Health Ministry’s Spokesman, Khaled Megahed, announced that Egypt now has a national plan to completely eliminate AIDS by the year 2030.
Other than raising social awareness, the plan includes regular medical examinations for those in high risk and offering antiretroviral drugs for those infected. The drugs can be found now in 15 specialized centers for free.
According to UNFPA Egypt, more than 5,000 young women and girls acquire HIV every week, the vast majority of them in southern Africa. Adolescent girls and young women in southern Africa acquire HIV five to seven years earlier than their male peers.
