The Dangers of Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal has become very popular in Egypt. Everyone seems to be doing it! The difference between LASER and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is important seeing as both are offered here.
Laser is a type of light with three characteristics that define it as the brightest, most powerful light known to mankind! It is monochromatic, which means that laser is 100% one pure colour. IPL is not; it has different colours within the light and only a small percentage of these colours are effective in hair removal sessions. Laser is also collimated, which means it’s slow to spread out, making it extremely powerful as all of the light can be used for hair removal. IPL on the other hand is not. Laser is extremely effective when it comes to hair removal but IPL is not even reinforcing, the light cancels itself out; Laser does the opposite. IPL still has a strong place in the market and has been proven to be quite effective when removing scars caused by sun damage.
The side effects of both laser and IPL are quite standard and similar to waxing, which includ; itching, pink skin, redness and swelling around the treatment area.
The more serious risks are acne, skin discoloration, burns, hypo pigmentation (white spots), scab formation and infection. These horrible side effects might not be worth the risk for some people. The risks are reduced by scheduling a consultation before you start the hair removal treatment to decide with your dermatologist which laser type would be appropriate for your skin type. Also as every doctor will tell you before hand NEVER go in for a treatment with a tan.
Patients should definitely use numbing creams over large sensitive skin areas before the treatment by minimum of half an hour to help reduce pain expected during treatments.
