Artkhana Draws a Smile on Cancer Children’s Faces

Art-based NGO and charity organization Artkhana’s mission statement is “Proving art can…” in this scenario, put a smile on a child’s face. Friday the 14th, Artkhana held an event in the National Cancer Institution in Downtown Cairo. Artkhana members and volunteers alike had the chance to visit the children and I had the pleasure of being one of them.

Artkhana believes in hope as medicine and that art can teach hope and humanity. The sole purpose of their Cancer Kids campaign is to shed a little light into the dark lives of the sick children. Activities included sketching, doodling, painting, writing, hand crafts, music and playing games. The Artkhana team averaged around forty individuals for 20+ patients.

This NGO’s main concern is spreading art to whoever needs it. Children, struggling artists, the underprivileged… whoever art can assist because it is a form of help the world needs. Previous events that Artkhana has organized include tours to explore Cairo in an attempt to inspire artists and art initiatives like Darb Sa3ada that spread to the rural areas of Egypt. Another event much like Darb Sa3ada will take place in January 2015 in Fayoum.
