My Two Cents: Beauty Amidst the Anger

a&b

Facebook has become a bit exhausting lately with all the political drama and obscene amounts of vain selfies and posts. I, like everyone else I know, have at one point or another considered de-activating my account for a little peace of mind.

This morning, I opened my laptop and, as usual, started checking Facebook before I started work. I scrolled through the angry posts about Jan 25th and the Muslim Brotherhood, Syria, the Maryland shooting and more daily reminders of the world’s ugliness.

A few friends posted about the “dangers” of pasta, milk, meat and sugar. Let me tell you, nothing will kill your appetite faster than pictures of puss coming out of genetically manufactured meat and a photo of burnt sugar telling me I’m going to die. I’m all for eating healthy, but every person is different and every body handles everything differently. And can’t we share health information without terrifying one another?

As the gloom began washing over me, I continued scrolling down through the late-night party posts and baby pictures (that’s what happens when you’re nearing 30 – your friends start drifting into two very different extremes of bottle popping). That’s when I found a YouTube post by a friend from home about a band he wished he could see live. So I clicked. And I kid you not, I could feel my ears getting turned on.

Suddenly, my mood was lifted. With all the crap we hear on the radio, it was so amazing to hear beautifully composed music. With all the anger that filled my newsfeed, it was amazing to find something tasteful shared that could actually benefit others instead of spreading anger, guilt and fear. It was nice to find a bit of beauty amidst the anger.

I’ve got to get back to work but I invite you to enjoy the phenomenal acoustic concert of Above & Beyond and share something positive today:

Also, don’t eat sugar or you will die.

WE SAID THIS: Thanks for this, Chereen!
