Tensions Explode in Aleppo: Rebels Seize Control, Civilian Lives at Risk

By Islam Salah

On November 27, 2024, Syrian rebels launched a large-scale offensive on government-controlled areas in Western Aleppo, escalating tensions in a region that has long been a hotspot of violence.

The attack, led by opposition groups such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), marks a significant turn in the Syrian conflict, drawing attention not just to its military impact but also its humanitarian consequences.

The assault began early Wednesday, catching many by surprise. Rebels, including HTS, claimed control of over 15 villages and seized key military assets, including Base 46, a critical government stronghold in the area.

These gains are a considerable blow to the Assad regime, which has worked tirelessly to maintain control over Aleppo and its surroundings. Opposition groups also captured valuable military hardware and took several government soldiers hostage, further complicating the situation.

This aggressive push follows a period of simmering violence, where government forces, backed by Russian airstrikes, had intensified their bombardments of opposition-held territories. Rebels, in turn, have long stated the need to defend themselves and provide a safe haven for displaced civilians fleeing these attacks.

A Shifting Battlefield

What makes this offensive particularly interesting is the growing cooperation of Syria’s opposition forces. From Islamist groups to the more moderate Free Syrian Army, a range of factions have come together, united by their shared goal of confronting Assad’s forces.

This level of cooperation is significant because it represents a shift from the often fragmented and sometimes divided rebel movements of the past.

As these groups claim victories and seize territory in strategic locations, they are also sending a message to both the Syrian government and its international allies, Russia and Iran.

For the first time since the 2020 ceasefire, the regime is now facing serious territorial losses in the north. This change on the ground could tip the scales of power again, leaving the government struggling to regain lost ground.

The Human Toll

As with any escalation, the human toll has been devastating. Dozens of civilians have been caught in the crossfire, with many fleeing their homes in search of safety. Plus, countless Syrians face dire conditions in overcrowded shelters, and many families are struggling to survive amidst the chaos.

For those living in Aleppo, fear of airstrikes, artillery bombardment, and ground fighting is a daily reality.

A Bitter Return to Conflict

As the violence in Aleppo escalates, Syria’s path to peace is still shaky. The renewed clashes between rebel factions and government forces are a grim reminder of the ongoing turmoil that has defined the country for over a decade.

While the military outcomes are still unfolding, the human cost continues to rise, leaving a long road ahead for any hopes of stability.
