Six Dead & 51 Missing As Migrant Ship Sinks Off Tunisia’s Coast
In a devastating incident that unfolded off the coast of Tunisia’s Kerkennah island, a migrant ship carrying individuals from sub-Saharan Africa sank, has left at least six people dead and 51 others missing.
Tunisia is facing a record wave of migration instead of Libya as the region’s main departure point for those escaping poverty and conflict in Africa and the Middle East for Europe. These are families and young adults seeking a more promising future and stability. Risking their lives by getting on a boat for around 24 days in the middle of the sea. The number of dead and missing people rose to around 630 in the first half of 2023.
According to an unidentified judicial official who spoke to Reuters on Sunday, the people onboard were migrants hailing from various countries in sub-Saharan Africa. According to BBC News, Tunisian officials also said the bodies of 10 migrants were found on a beach near Sfax.
As the search and rescue operations continue tirelessly, hopes of finding survivors are dwindling. The Tunisian Coast Guard has been leading the efforts, deploying boats and helicopters to scour the area for any signs of life.
