According to the Egyptian Justice Ministry, the defeated presidential candidate Ahmed Shafik has been referred to a criminal court along with Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, the sons of the ex president Hosni Mubarak.

The judge Osama el-Saeedi accused them on charges of profiteering, assisting the seizure of public funds, and forging official documents for the corrupt sale of land in Ismailia governorate. The Egyptian judged also stated that Shafik has been placed on a “watch list” at border points.

Shafik said to Al-Ahram newspaper that his case was influenced by the Muslim Bortherhood’s political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party. He also stated that he would return to Egypt despite the risk of being arrested. One of Shafik’s supporters, Ahmed Abdel Ghani, also stated the Muslim Brotherhood was the main reason behind the accusations against Shafik. The complaint against Shafik was lodged by the member of the Islamist Wasat Party, Essam Sultan. Sultan accused the ex Primer minister of taking advantage of his position to sell lands at lower prices.

Shafik left Egypt with his family on 26 June after the results of the election. The ex Prime Minister is now in the United Arab Emirates.
