School in London Under Attack After Muslim Prayer Ban

While the Middle East is giving its undivided attention to the news coming from the neighboring Gaza Strip, turbulent events are taking place in London Court after a reputable school banned Muslim prayer.

A two-day hearing has been held this week. Is it a story of religious intolerance in the UK or nothing of the sort?

The ‘prayer ban’ incident went to court after the Muslim student stepped forward, claiming it was discriminatory. During the hearing on Tuesday, January 16th, she said that the ban made her feel like she didn’t belong to the community.

It’s worth mentioning that the ‘Michaela’ community school in question is known to be run by a strict headteacher, Katharine Birbalsingh.

It All Began In March 2023

In March 2023, the school banned prayers after 30 students were seen praying in the muddy playground without a prayer mat, something they weren’t allowed to bring. For this, the school was attacked, resulting in a Muslim-only prayer ban.

In response to allegations in court, the school implied that Muslim students were pressuring others to follow rituals like wearing hijab and performing prayers.

Jason Coppel, the representative of the school trust, told the court during a Wednesday hearing that the ban resulted in “an unprecedented outbreak of poor behavior among pupils” at the school.

The school is defending itself by saying that such strict rules are meant to apply to all students, pushing ethnic and religious differences aside.
