Q&A: DJ Maga on Deep House in Dubai and Spinning Around the World
A while back, we went to Supperclub, Dubai and were blown away by the music. It was smooth, but gave us energy. It was classic, but it was modern. We turned and found no one other than Mickael Agarla at the decks. We’ve listened to his music ever since on Soundcloud and have become big fans.
We had a little Q&A with DJ Maga and discovered more about our new favorite DJ.
Born to a French father and Italian mother, Maga’s Mediterranean influence is undeniable. While you may have seen Maga perform at Supperclub, Zuma, or private boat parties in Dubai, where he is currently based, he has performed all over the world. From Stockholm to Monte Carlo, Amsterdam to Capetown, Newcastle to Ibiza, Maga has spun around the globe.
How did you get started DJing? How did you first get interested and what was it that made you decide to pursue it more seriously?
I was previously running a club so every time after work, I would ask the manager on duty if I could play for an hour after the service. I eventually became a manager and got the keys to the house and would play until sunrise!
After getting gigs at friends’ parties, I decided it was now time to get a residency somewhere to be able to get somewhere.
Tell us about your first, worst and best experience on the decks.
My first experience was in Cape Town, South Africa. My first gig was actually in a festival called Holy Air.
My worst experience was definitely in Newcastle, when the mixer switched off for 10 minutes after my gig started. I started to play at 1:30, I was on main set. 10 minutes without music feels like hours, any DJ knows that. Until a second mixer arrived and everything got back to normal .
My best experience was when I played in SA Trinxa Beach in Ibiza. You should have seen this sunset, it was just magical!!
How would you define the genre of music you DJ?
Deep house, melodic, electronic.
How is the DJ scene and nightlife evolving in Dubai?
The DJ scene in Dubai is great. The Deep House sound is rising with the help of a couple of places such as Blue Marlin, Bootik at Vanity (on Wednesday), and Zuma for a chill one. A lot of new clubs keep popping so it’s great for DJs to get great exposure .
We heard that you’ve lived around the world, where is your favorite place so far?
Miami is definitely the one. It’s a city that is surrounded by some of the best clubs in the world.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
My target is to be based in one city with my recording studio, travel as much as I can, and hopefully get tours around the world.
My father once said, ‘”Do all you can do, make your dreams come true.”
