Khufu Pyramid Closed For Restoration Starting June
The Khufu pyramid will be closed to visitors to undergo restoration and maintenance beginning in June, as decided by the Supreme Council of Antiquities’ Board of Directors. While the pyramid of Khufu will be closed, the Pyramid of Menkaure will be accessible from the inside so people can still visit the Great Pyramids of Giza.
The decision comes as part of the periodic maintenance program that strives to preserve the Giza pyramids, which are an important part of Egypt’s legacy and a popular tourist destination for millions of people worldwide.
The Khufu pyramid is said to be the oldest and largest of the nine pyramids at the Giza Necropolis, and is the final resting place of king Khufu. It was completed in 2560 BC and took around 20 years to build.
According to Dr. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the initiative includes the restoration of other historic structures, for instance, repair work on Old Cairo’s Ben Azra Temple and Babylon Fortress have already been completed.
