Kazlak: Maadi’s Hottest New Restaurant
There are a few things Egyptians are famous for: the Pyramids, Fifi Abdou and FOOD. It’s no secret that Egyptians absolutely adore food and that why there’s no shortage of new restaurants opening up every single day in Cairo. With so many restaurants, though, they all start to look and feel the same and they start to blend in together and it’s hard for one restaurant to stand out among others, but that’s exactly what Kazlak decided to do.
Located in The Courtyard in Maadi, Kazlak just opened less than two months ago with a goal of trying to stay authentic to its Egyptian roots and to break out of the plastic restaurants image we’ve gotten used to. So instead of having all the restaurant décor and utensils bought from IKEA like a lot of restaurants we know, the people of Kazlak actually went all around Cairo to have all the plates, utensils and everything you find in the restaurant handmade and custom-made by local Egyptian workers especially for Kazlak.
There’s no one bowl or plate that looks like the other and instead of serving plastic water bottles, Kazlak tries to go green by serving water and all of their beverages in their very own custom-made water jars and glasses. They also make their very own sparkling water to use in their different drinks.
Kazlak offers a variety of items on the menu from pizza to ribs, duck to fish and even lobster with all of their ingredients being local and fresh except for the chocolates and a very few ingredients which are imported.
To start off your meal, Kazlak offers a few soup options like the “Onion and Cheese Soup” and the “Watercress and Smoked Salmon Soup”. It also offers a number of salads and starters to prepare you for the main course with the “Beef Potato Espuma” standing out, which is a potato mousse over beef and caramelized onions creating a unique texture that you’re going to absolutely love. They also have smoked chicken wings with garlic dip that are absolutely mouthwatering.
For the main dish, Kazlak offers a wide range between pizza, steak, burgers, chicken, fish and even duck. Standing out among the many options is the “Spicy Chorizo Pizza,” which is topped with hot tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, chorizo sausage, beef bacon, roasted garlic and oregano and made in an old traditional pizza oven.
Their “Smoked Short Ribs” are also to die for: slow smoked short ribs with mashed potatoes and caramelized onions and served with a mini salad.
Their “Duck 2 Way” — pan-seared duck breast glazed with ginger sweet sauce and confit duck leg with a side of lemon roasted gnocchi — will make your tastebuds explode.
Also, for all of the fancy people out there, Kazlak offers “Brown Butter Lobster”: 400-700 gm of fresh red sea lobster poached in brown butter and lemon served with pasta linguini tossed with olives, sundried tomatoes and bisque sauce.
To finish off your meal, Kazlak offers desserts, our favorites being the “Crème Brûlée” served on an Italian biscuit and the “Hot Chocolate Mousse” with homemade vanilla ice cream that just melts in your mouth.
To wash down your meal, they have many options of cold and hot beverages, sparkling beverages, smoothies, fresh juice, yogurt drinks and cocktails.
Kazlak is a must-visit, with its friendly staff and its finger-licking dishes. It’s definitely one of our new favorite places in Maadi that we’ll be going back to over and over again and we highly recommend that you do the same!
