Usually food poisoning comes from a virus or bacteria. Food poisoning because of bacteria occurs when one eats rotten food or food that was not cooked well and therefore, some bacteria may have still be living in it. Whatever the case, your body will react the same.

Food poisoning lasts about three days and can be treated at home. In worst cases, however, food poisoning can need hospitalizing.

Signs of food poisoning :

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • sweating
  • stomach pain
  • tearing eyes
  • mild fever

If you suffer from some of these cases, here’s what you can do to try and keep it under control:

  • Refrain from all solid foods until vomiting ends, then try and eat something light like rice, bananas or bread.
  • Sipping liquids may help avoid vomiting.
  • Stay away from any spicy, sweet or greasy foods.
  • Do not take any anti-nausea medications, antibiotics or diuretics without asking your doctor as they may lead to dehydration.

Through vomit and diarrhea, your body loses a lot of liquid and you may easily get dehydrated. Dehydration is very dangerous, especially for pregnant women, kids, elder people and anyone with diabetes. And in order to prevent that you should:

  • Drink clear fluids, starting with small sips.
  • Drink an oral rehydration solution if diarrhea and vomit last for more than 24 hours.

You should immediately call your doctor if you notice any of these signs:

  • Fever higher than 38.6 Celcius
  • Bloody diarrhea or dark stools
  • Signs of dehydration (dry mouth or increased heart beat or breathing rate)
  • If you can’t keep fluids down
  • If you are unable to see or speak
  • If you pass little or no pee

In order to prevent food poisoning all in all, you should always make sure that your fruits and vegetables are washed carefully and your food is cooked very well. Of course, avoid eating at unclean places and while shopping, always make sure you check the expiration date.
