Egypt Hosts Pivotal Conference to End Sudan’s War: What Is Expected?
Since April of last year, Sudan has plunged into a state of war and violence. The civil war between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has led to the death of more than 13,000 people.
As a way to counter Sudan’s current fate, Egypt will host a conference this month, June, where they will bring together Sudanese civilian political groups to build a permanent peace plan.
What Is Expected In The Meeting?
In the conference, the hope is for the various Sudanese civilian political groups to reach a consensus on a way to build a lasting peace plan for Sudan. This is to be done through a Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue.
Cairo hopes that all Sudanese political groups will actively participate in the conference, along with the relevant regional and international partners who will also be in attendance.
The main push for this conference comes from Egypt’s view that the current conflict in Sudan is a Sudanese issue. They also believe that any future political processes or decisions should be made by all national Sudanese parties.
Egypt’s Ties With Sudan
Egypt and Sudan had quite an alliance and history together. That relationship is exemplified through the words of the Egyptian foreign ministry, “[the conference is] in light of the deep historical, social, fraternal and deep ties that bind the Egyptian and Sudanese peoples together and based on Egypt’s commitment to supporting all efforts to achieve peace and stability in Sudan.”
The conference is merely a continuation of Cairo’s efforts to stop the war in Sudan, along with the cooperation of regional and international partners, including the United Nations, the African Union, and the Arab League.
Knowing that such major political groups will be in attendance could possibly be a good step in bringing Sudan closer to achieving peace.
