Celebrities Feel the Heat With Blockout 2024: Is It Actually Working?
In a world of contradictions and juxtapositions, on one side was opulence, fame, and fortune exemplified by the celebrities dripping in wealth at the Met Gala. On the other were children dying and parents mourning their deaths in Gaza.
From there, a spark of anger, rage, and disappointment was directed at those very celebrities, sparking what is known as “Blockout 2024”.
What Exactly Is The Blockout?
The ongoing atrocities in Gaza, with over 34,000 killed, ignited rage across multiple countries, with student encampments and protests taking place all over the world as a wake-up call against the injustice. In stark comparison, many celebrities remained silent on the matter.
Fueled by frustration over the lack of action from celebrities, a TikTok user by the name of @ladyfromtheoutside decided to take action. In a video with over 2.5 million views, she sparked the Blockout 2024 movement. Her exact words were, “It’s time to block all the celebrities, influencers, and wealthy socialites who are not using their resources to help those in dire need.”
The world listened and many celebrities began losing followers.
Who Are The Celebrities?
Many celebrities are on the list but the ones who are the most spoken about and circulated over social media are Beyonce, the Kardashians, and Taylor Swift. They are some of the biggest celebrities out there, with millions of social media followers, and the fact that they have not spoken up about Palestine has put them at the top of millions of people’s lists.
Is It Actually Working?
Since it started, the Blockout has actually been working. One TikTok user called Jackie took part in the Celebrity Block Party. She ended up blocking the Kardashians, the Jenners, and Taylor Swift. The day after she blocked them, on TikTok, she was bombarded with ads for Taylor Swift and the Kardashians.
She had never received ads for these celebrities before, but after she blocked them, the ads were streaming in full force. The reason behind this is that the moment you block the content of these celebrities, they start pushing over their ads to regain their engagement. This is an indication that the Block Party may be working.
Another way the Blockout might be working is by how celebrities are losing followers. Four days ago, Kim Kardashian alone lost about 50,000 followers in just two hours on TikTok.
It is important to bear in mind that she still has 363 million followers on Instagram and over 9 million on TikTok, which begs the question: How many followers will she need to lose for this to actually take effect, and will that number ever be reached? Only time will tell.
