For more than nine months, a piece of Egypt’s ancient history found a temporary home thousands of kilometres away in Hong Kong. Now, after welcoming more than 600,000 visitors, the Ancient Egypt Unveiled: Treasures from Egyptian Museums exhibition has officially come to an end, with its remarkable artefacts preparing to return home.
Nine Months of Ancient Egypt
Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, the exhibition ran until August 31, 2026, following its opening in November 2025. Described by the museum as its largest, most comprehensive and longest-running display of ancient Egyptian treasures, it brought together 250 artefacts spanning nearly 5,000 years of Egyptian civilisation. The objects came from seven Egyptian museums, alongside finds from the Saqqara archaeological site.
600,000 Came to See It
By the time the exhibition closed, more than 600,000 people had visited. The turnout reflected the huge fascination with ancient Egyptian civilisation among audiences in Hong Kong and showed just how far Egypt’s history and cultural influence continue to travel.
The Stars of the Show
The exhibition featured everything from monumental statues and gold ornaments to coffins, animal mummies and everyday objects that offered a glimpse into life and beliefs in ancient Egypt. Its four sections explored the land of the pharaohs, the world of Tutankhamun, the latest discoveries from Saqqara and Egypt’s connections with other ancient civilisations.
Among its major highlights were monumental royal sculptures, including a 2.7-ton quartzite statue of Tutankhamun and a granite statue of King Merneptah, alongside a gilded mummy mask and artefacts connected to the archaeological discoveries at Saqqara. Together, the collection offered visitors a journey through Egypt’s political history, art, daily life and spiritual world.
More Than a Museum Show
Beyond putting extraordinary artefacts on display, exhibitions like this have become an important part of Egypt’s cultural diplomacy. The collaboration between the Hong Kong Palace Museum and Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities was also part of wider cultural exchange between Egypt and China, coinciding with 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2026.
As the nine-month run comes to a close, repatriation procedures have officially begun for the participating artefacts. After introducing hundreds of thousands of visitors to the stories of ancient Egypt, these treasures are now making their journey back home.
