Hamza Abdelkarim has just added his name to a growing list of Arab footballers who made their mark on the international stage while still teenagers. The 18-year-old Egyptian forward made his competitive first-team debut for Barcelona in the club’s 5–2 La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano, becoming the first Egyptian to represent Barça’s senior team competitively.
His breakthrough is another reminder of just how much young talent the Arab world continues to produce. Hamza Abdelkarim: Joined Barcelona at 18
At just 18, Hamza Abdelkarim is already living what many young footballers can only dream of. The Egyptian striker joined Barcelona from Al Ahly in 2026 and quickly caught attention during pre-season, scoring four goals and earning praise from head coach Hansi Flick.
After making his unofficial first-team debut during pre-season, Hamza took another major step by making his competitive La Liga debut against Rayo Vallecano.
The young forward is now part of Barcelona’s first-team setup, with plenty of eyes on his development as he begins his journey at one of football’s biggest clubs.
Ayyoub Bouaddi: Joined Lille at 16
Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi is the newest name on this list. At 18, he made a major move from Lille to Manchester City in August 2026, signing a five-year deal in a transfer worth around €100 million.
Bouaddi had already built an impressive résumé at Lille despite his age, making his first-team debut at just 16 and gaining Champions League experience before becoming a Morocco international. He was also part of Morocco’s historic 2026 World Cup run to the quarter-finals.
Now at Manchester City, the teenager has taken another huge step, joining one of Europe’s biggest clubs at the beginning of what could be a very exciting career.
Achraf Hakimi: Joined Real Madrid at 19
Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi was only 17 when he began making the transition from Real Madrid’s youth setup towards senior football. Having joined the club’s academy as a youngster, Hakimi progressed through the ranks before making his Real Madrid first-team debut in 2017.
His time at Real Madrid was followed by spells at Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan before he joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. Today, Hakimi is one of the world’s most recognised right-backs and remains a key figure for Morocco.
Riyad Mahrez: Joined Quimper at 18
Riyad Mahrez’s journey began far from the glamour of the Premier League. At 18, the Algerian winger joined French club Quimper in 2009, beginning a professional career that would eventually take him to Leicester City and Manchester City.
Mahrez became one of Leicester’s most important players during their historic 2015–16 Premier League title-winning campaign before moving to Manchester City, where he won multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. He now plays for Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.
Youssef En-Nesyri: Joined Atlético Malagueño at 18
Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri moved from the Mohammed VI Football Academy to Málaga as a teenager, joining the club’s Juvenil setup in 2015 at around 18. He quickly progressed through the ranks, alternating between the youth side and Atlético Malagueño before breaking into Málaga’s first team.
His career later took him to Leganés and Sevilla, where he became a prolific striker and won two Europa League titles. After a spell with Fenerbahçe, En-Nesyri moved to Saudi Arabia in 2026, joining Al-Ittihad.
Houssem Aouar: Joined Lyon at 18
Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar made his senior breakthrough at Lyon at just 18. A product of the French club’s academy, Aouar made his first-team debut in February 2017 in a Europa League match against AZ Alkmaar, quickly showing that he could hold his own at the highest level.
He went on to become a key figure for Lyon before moving to Roma in 2023 and later joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad. Today, Aouar continues to represent Algeria while playing in Saudi Arabia.
Ahmed Hossam (Mido): Joined KAA Gent at 17
Long before the current generation of Egyptian stars, Ahmed Hossam Mido was already taking bold steps abroad. At just 17, the Egyptian striker moved to Belgian club KAA Gent in 2000.
After initially struggling with homesickness, Mido settled in and earned his way into the first team, making his league debut that same year.
His early European experience paved the way for a career that included Ajax, Marseille, Roma, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. Mido retired from football in 2013 and has since remained involved in the game through coaching, scouting and football analysis.
Mohamed Salah: Joined Basel at 19
Mohamed Salah’s journey to becoming one of the world’s biggest football stars began in Egypt, where he made his senior debut for El Mokawloon at just 17. His performances soon caught European attention, leading to a move to Swiss club Basel at 19, where he continued developing and made his mark in European competitions.
From there, Salah went on to play for Chelsea, Fiorentina and Roma before joining Liverpool in 2017. He has since become a club legend, winning the Premier League and Champions League among numerous other honours, while establishing himself as one of the most celebrated Arab footballers of his generation.
