New York Fashion Week Top Trends

If you don’t already know, New York Fashion Week is just one part of the four major fashion weeks’ family, which also includes London, Milan and Paris. Every February and September sees back to back fashion weeks in these cities. Since 1943, designers have previewed their lines in September for spring and summer of the following year.

I’ll give you the scoop on each of the major fashion weeks for the next four weeks. Since NYFW was the first one to wrap up, here are the top trends showcased for S/S 2014 by designers who contributed. The 90’s are officially back and even the 70’s have made several appearances.

Fringes

It’s a 70’s classic. You might find it on your grandmother’s shawl or your mom’s graduation dress. Calvin Klein recreated the all-fringe dress with different geometrical directions, going horizontal and vertical in the same dress giving it a whole new look.

Crop Tops

The late 90’s scene was practically built on crop tops and in some part boho tops. That’s how belly button piercings came to life. You might consider a gym membership for the fall and winter, because when spring hits, you’ll need to show off your abs. No single designer left out the crop top trend; everybody introduced it in their own way.

Sheer

Not Miley sheer, more of ladylike sheer. Sexy, casual sheer fabrics are perfect for spring layering. Jason Wu showed off chic evening gowns with sheer feminine fabrics in darker colors. Lively ruffles were shown by Zac Posen.

Slouchy Pants

No, not like MC Hammer, thank God! Although they went back a couple of decades for this trend, designers managed to update the look and keep it modern. Think upgraded harem pants, like the ones you got on your trip to Thailand. From Marc Jacobs to Karen Walker, the slouchy pants dominated this fashion week.

Florals

Every time I think of florals for spring I remember Miranda Presley’s famous quote from The Devil Wears Prada: “Floral? for spring? Groundbreaking.” But no matter what we do, flowers will always be associated with spring. NYFW’s take was a little bit different with monochrome floral and darker colors. True to his style, Michael Kors offered sexy, feminine floral patterns.

Hippie Hair

Most of the models rocked down-the-middle splits. Whether stick-straight or natural waves, both were worn loose and carefree. Some crown braids surprisingly made appearances on the runways as well as simple, messy dos. All hippie, all natural, mostly 70’s.

Plaids

The school-girl skirt pattern was all the rage in the grunge 90’s scene, with flannel-covered bands like Nirvana. This year the plaids are a part of this 90’s coming-back-to-life trend, in jackets, shirts, pants, you name it.

White

Unlike Apple, New York fashion week designers still believe in white. The 90’s minimalistic move was all about simplicity, especially the formals. Even two-year-old Harper Beckham wore white for her first-ever fashion week.
