Explosion at Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria Kills at Least 6 People

According to ON Live, another bomb explosion took place at the Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria.

 

 

The secretary of Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria has announced that the Pope was unharmed, and that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber in front of the church’s gates.

 

 

Reports from eyewitnesses on Masrawy.com claim that they saw a suicide bomber, around the age of 30 to 35, with a suicide belt. It was also reported that at least 20 people were killed and 10 were injured. The numbers, however, are not confirmed.

According to ON Live, however, there are three confirmed deaths and 21 injured; one of the fallen victims was Emad Elrakaiby, a police officer who lost his life while trying to stop the suicide bomber. However, the Ministry of Health reported that six people were killed and 33 were injured.

 

 

This incident happened right after another bomb earlier in the morning at Tanta occured, where 21 deaths have been confirmed, and 14 injured.

 

Update 4:48 pm, April 9th: The number confirmd deaths so far is 11, and at least 40 injured.
