Exonerated Central Park Five Member Sworn As NY City Council

Muslim “Central Park Five” member Yusef Salaam, exonerated since 2002, has been sworn into a seat on the New York City Council representing Harlem. Name rings a bell?

Netflix made a drama series in 2019 titled When They See Us , based on true events, it narrates the story of five African and Latino teenagers (Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise) who were wrongfully convicted of raping a white woman in 1989. This group of five teenagers was known as “Central Park Five,” and Yusuf Salaam, who was 15 years old at that time, played by Ethan Herisse, was one of them. ,

Back then, former US President Donald Trump called for their execution. Salaam spent seven years in prison before being released when the real attacker confessed to the crime.

Fast forward to now, decades after the incident, Salaam became council man to the New York City Council representing Harlem.

Significantly, in a moment that signifies social justice, he took his oath to the council with a Quran in his hand, the same Quran that his brother gave to him when he was only 15 years old and wrongfully sentenced to prison. Possibly to single a drive to further empower people of his faith across the state and country.
