The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) Launches Micro-Credential in Energy Efficiency to Address Global Challenges
The UAE’s American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) is introducing a Level 9 Micro-Credential in Energy Efficiency and Management, set to begin in Spring 2025.
The program is designed to provide specialized training in energy conservation and management across multiple sectors. With grants available for the inaugural cohort, AURAK aims to equip professionals and master’s degree candidates with the skills necessary to drive energy efficiency initiatives.
Tackling Global Energy Challenges
The launch comes at a crucial time as nations work to meet global energy efficiency targets. At COP28 in Dubai last year, countries committed to doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030.
One key measure of this progress is global energy intensity. A decrease in energy intensity shows that economies are producing more with less energy, indicating better efficiency. If energy intensity rises, it suggests more energy is being used to generate the same economic value, which hinders progress toward sustainability.
However, the International Energy Agency’s 2024 Energy Efficiency Report shows that global energy intensity is expected to improve by just 1% this year, well below the 4% annual improvement needed to meet COP28 goals. This gap signals that while progress is being made, it isn’t enough to keep pace with climate targets.
“As the world races against time to double the rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030, AURAK is delighted to launch this micro-credential,” said Prof. Stephen Wilhite, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at AURAK.
The Value of Micro-Credentials
Micro-credentials are gaining traction as an efficient way for professionals to enhance their expertise without committing to long-term degree programs. AURAK’s program caters to those in engineering and related fields who are eager to develop specialized skills in energy efficiency.
This micro-credential is supposed to impart specialized knowledge in energy efficiency techniques while teaching students to identify and implement conservation opportunities across various industries.
Expanding Career Horizons
Graduates of the program will have the opportunity to pursue careers in roles such as Energy Manager, Sustainability Consultant, and Environmental Engineer. The growing focus on sustainable development across the UAE and beyond ensures that energy efficiency specialists will play a pivotal role in shaping future industries.
AURAK’s investment in energy education reflects the UAE’s broader sustainability ambitions. By fostering local expertise in energy management, the university is contributing to the region’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, lower energy costs, and enhance economic resilience.
