Sheikh Hamdan’s Dive into Environmentalism: Unveiling the Dubai Reef Project
Known as the uber-cool Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan is a modern-day royal figure beloved for many reasons. Not only is he an Insta-famous poet and daredevil, but he’s also an animal lover who is into thrills and Ferraris. He recently went for a deep dive into the UAE’s waters, and you must be wondering why.
Well, it turns out that the prince is also a philanthropist and humanitarian, and he dabbles in environmentalism. His dive was a special way of launching the opening of the Dubai Reef, known as the world’s largest marine reef development project.
What Exactly is Dubai Reef?
It was first announced back in December 2023 during Cop28, and it plans to be a massive environmentalist project. Throughout a four-year period, ‘20,000 purpose-built reef modules‘ are going to be deployed across Dubai’s waters that span 600 square kilometers.
The entire project is part of the emirate’s efforts to promote ecological sustainability and achieve the strategic goals of Dubai and the UAE, including the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategy.
What’s The End Goal?
Over the next decade, through Dubai Reef, there are hopes that the fish and biomass population will increase by eight times. There are also hopes of capturing seven million tonnes of carbon annually.
Reaching such a goal will bring the UAE a step closer to achieving its overall ecological goals and becoming a sustainable country.
