Sharjah in My Heart: Reflecting the Culture of UAE’s Identity through Art
With young artists creating magnificent pieces of artwork, an exhibition hosted by Sharjah Heritage Museum displays the artwork of 20 incredibly talented young art students from the University of Sharjah.
The exhibition named “Sharjah in my Heart”reflects the cultural identity of the UAE through the artwork of these talented students.
The young artists have created works including paintings, digital prints on canvas and items of clothing – all inspired by the museum’s extensive and varied heritage collection.
“The students enjoyed a tour of the museum and were asked to create contemporary art influenced by what they had seen. They’ve come up with some truly inspiring designs that evoke the character and traditions of Sharjah, the UAE and wider Islamic world.” said Manal Ataya, Director General of the SMD.
The Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) was established in 2006 by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and aims to provide unique standards of museum services through its museums, galleries, educational and research programs.
While aiming to gain respect, appreciation and understanding for Sharjah’s identity and the value of its cultural and natural heritage, SMD focuses on portraying this culture with the highest of standards in every way possible.
Engaging with youth and giving them the opportunity to express themselves is an important part of what SMD does. By giving the students the opportunity to create contemporary art inspired by heritage, SMD will be able to demonstrate the influence of history on modern creativity
Artworks on display include Sharjah – The Light of the Emirate, a wall-hanging which makes use of an old lamp from the museum to symbolise the artist’s impression of Sharjah as the “city of light”, and Lifestyle, a vibrant digital textile wall-hanging that captures the spirit of desert life.
The exhibition will be running until December at the Sharjah Heritage Museum.
