Newly Created Bike Lanes in Cairo Casually Mistaken for Parking Spots
Egyptians have always been known for making the best use out of everything. Take the Alexandrians who literally jet skied and wake boarded their way through their flooded streets a few weeks back, for example. Sure, we can be resourceful and innovative, but in the latest mishap, we were nothing but sadly ignorant.
Bike lanes have newly graced a couple of streets in Cairo, mainly the infamous NA road joining Nasr City and New Cairo, as well as one road in Maadi. What did people do with them? They carelessly used them as parking space. The shame we feel is infinite.
The fact that the bike lanes were misused aside, I do believe that their creation is of absolute necessity. Cairo has long been suffering from major traffic issues and so introducing safe lanes for people to ride their bikes might help alleviate them.
That being said, it is high time we realized that no, we cannot just ignore road signs and park wherever we please. These bike lanes cannot be used as parking spots, or else that would just be defeating their whole purpose and might pose some danger to the cyclers using them.
If there is a big road sign with a bike on it, this is a clear indication that this is not a parking lot. Please refrain from using it as one. Let us support and not demote this potentially ground-breaking initiative.
