Maria’s note: Tantawi dismissed
According to state TV Al Arabiya, President Mohamed Morsi has just dismissed Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawy, the head of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces replacing him forField Marshall Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi as minister of defense and general commander of the Egyptian forces. Morsi has also sacked Chief-of-Staff and SCAF’s number two, Sami Annan.
The new vice president is the reformist senior judge, Mahmoud Mekki.
The constitutional amendments put forward by SCAF right before the appointment of Morsi as president have been cancelled as well.
If this was not a deal between SCAF and the government we will probably see a confrontation between both parts. Until now there seems to be no reaction from the military side.
Stay tuned for more updates.
