Early Monday, Israeli jets bombed Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah militants after Hezbollah said it launched missiles and drones toward Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The initial tally showed 31 people had been killed and 149 injured in the strikes, which Israel said targeted Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut.
The attack on Israel overnight was the first time the Lebanese movement claimed responsibility for an operation against Israel since a November 2024 ceasefire sought to end over a year of hostilities between the two.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the Hezbollah attack was “an irresponsible and suspicious act that jeopardises Lebanon’s security and safety and provides Israel with pretexts to continue its aggression”.
