After almost three years of closure, Egypt’s most famous zoo is getting ready for a big comeback. The Giza Zoo, first opened in 1891, is the third-oldest zoo in the world and the very first in Africa. Now, after its largest-ever restoration, it’s expected to reopen in 2026 with a modern look that still honors its historic roots.
Preserving the Zoo’s Historic Landmarks
The renovation isn’t just about adding new attractions — it’s about protecting the zoo’s soul. More than 3,000 trees are being conserved, and historic landmarks like the Eiffel Bridge, Royal Rest Hall, Chandlery Grotto, and the remains of the Haramlek Palace are being carefully restored. Even the walking paths have been redesigned to make them easier to explore, while still keeping their old character.

Welcoming 362 New Animals to Giza Zoo
The Giza Zoo already houses around 4,800 animals and birds, but one of the biggest changes visitors can look forward to is the arrival of 362 new animals that will be brought in from abroad. This large addition is set to give the zoo a completely fresh feel, expanding the variety of species on display and adding more diversity to its collection
To welcome these newcomers, the animal enclosures have also been rebuilt to match international welfare standards, giving all the animals more space, comfort, and a healthier environment to thrive in.
Daytime Experiences: Green Spaces and Family Attractions
During the day, the zoo will feel greener and more welcoming, with wide open spaces and upgraded facilities. A new tunnel will even connect the park to the Orman Botanical Garden, creating a huge green escape in the middle of Giza.

Heritage Nights: Light Shows and Cultural Storytelling
At night, the zoo will take on a whole new personality with “Heritage Nights.” Instead of normal lights, the historic buildings and monuments will be lit up with lasers and projections. The Eiffel Bridge will glow like it did in the 1940s, the Royal Rest House will shine with its old glamour, and even ruins like the Haremlik Palace will turn into works of art told through light.
Behind the Scenes: Training, Nutrition, and Veterinary Care
The project is also investing in the care of the animals. Guards are receiving international training, a licensed veterinary pharmacy has been set up in cooperation with the Egyptian Drug Authority, and new nutritional systems are in place to keep the animals healthier than ever.

A New Chapter for a Global Landmark
With its rich history and brand-new upgrades, the Giza Zoo is set to become a top attraction not just for Egyptians but for visitors from around the world. It’s a place where history, wildlife, and modern entertainment will come together — a mix of nostalgia and new experiences, all in one of the most historic zoos on the planet.
