In Pictures: The UAE’s ’10 Million Meals’ Initiative Exceeds the Original Target, Reaching 11 Million!

The “10 Million Meals” initiative is a campaign that was launched last month by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and is led by Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum, wife of Sheikh Mohammed, and overseen by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives. Since the coronavirus led many businesses to shut down, workers have either lost their jobs or ended up with a salary reduction, and so the campaign came to life to help low-income UAE workers and families by providing them with their daily Iftars during Ramadan.

The Director at Global Initiatives Sara Al Nuaimi told The National, “The meals are delivered to labor accommodation, as well as individuals and families affected by the Covid-19 outbreak, to whom they are sent door-to-door.” Packages are being prepared every day across the Emirates’ restaurants, ready to be sent out to low-income individuals and families. Every meal weighs around 600 grams and includes a serving of rice, chicken, three dates, a piece of fruit, a 500ml bottle of water, and a carton of Laban Up.

In the first week of Ramadan, it was revealed that 1.3 million meals were handed out and that the overall donations that were made by businesses and the public exceeded the original target, reaching 11 million meals!
