Since the beginning of the genocide in Gaza, the United Arab Emirates has stepped up to send clean drinking water to Gaza, from small desalination plants to now a full-scale pipeline across the border. These efforts have expanded significantly and are providing life-saving relief to hundreds of thousands of people in dire conditions.
Opened 7.5 km Pipeline Supplying Water to a Million People Daily
In August 2025, the UAE inaugurated a 7.5 km pipeline that carries desalinated water from Egypt directly into southern Gaza. This stream delivers over 7.5 million litres per day, enough for upwards of a million people. It connects to the Al-Buraq reservoir in Khan Younis, serving as a key storage and distribution hub. It is reportedly the largest single water-supply project in Gaza since the genocide began.
Built Six Desalination Plants to Serve Over 600,000 People
A year earlier, the UAE had already built six desalination plants on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing. Together, these plants produced about 1.2 million gallons of drinking water a day, which was then trucked into Gaza to serve over 600,000 people.
Repaired Wells and Reservoirs to Restore Water Access in Northern Gaza
At the same time, the UAE partnered with the Gaza municipality to repair wells, reservoirs, and damaged pipelines in northern districts. This work restored access to clean water in areas cut off during the conflict.

Completion of 3 km Transmission Line to Speed Up Distribution at Gaza Border
To speed up delivery, the UAE constructed a 3 km transmission line from its Rafah-based plants to the Saudi Water Reservoir at the Egypt–Gaza border. This allowed aid trucks to fill faster and distribute the water more efficiently across the Strip.
Opened Three Desalination Plants to Supply Water to 300,000 People
In December 2023, the UAE opened three desalination plants in Egypt’s Rafah. These plants produced about 600,000 gallons per day, enough to supply roughly 300,000 people, laying the groundwork for later expansion.

In just under two years, the UAE’s water aid to Gaza has evolved from an initial set of plants into a robust lifeline stretching across the border. The efforts now deliver millions of litres of water daily, offering essential relief in a region where safe drinking water is in extremely short supply.
