Help Sudanese Refugees: Actions You Can Take Now

Since mid-April, Sudan entered into a state of conflict as a direct result of a vicious power struggle between the regular army and a parliamentary force known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). That sudden slide into violence between the two forces forced many to flee the country. So far, the total number of South Sudanese refugees passed 2 million and so according to UNHCR, it has become the largest refugee crisis in Africa. Today, all across the region, many countries have been playing their part to help out. There are many ways for you to help out as well.

Volunteer

For anyone living in Egypt, one of the best ways to help out is to volunteer at any of the country’s refugee centers. A great option is Cairo’s Refuge Egypt, open since 1987 and offering a wide range of programs. Beyond that, there is also Saint Andrew’s Refugee Services, founded in 1979, that works to help enhance the lives of refugees in the country.

Give Out Donations

For those living outside of Egypt, donations are always a great option. Sudan’s Citizen’s Call for Emergency Evacuations Committee have set up a GoFundMe Page that you can visit using this link. By donating, it will help the committee to evacuate Sudanese citizens from the country as a way to flee the war. Another great option is to donate to The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) that are already making strides in helping out in the Sudanese crisis.

Read Up On Sudan

One of the ways to help that is often overlooked is to read up on Sudan itself and the ongoing crisis. Information is available through many different platforms including Sudanese publications like the Sudan Tribune and Africa Times. Once you’re updated, you can then share the information with friends and family to help raise awareness.

No matter what method you choose to help, every effort counts especially as Sudan has officially been declared to be in the midst of a humanitarian crisis.
