From Zionism to Critique: A Summation Of Biden’s Remarks Throughout The Genocide

US President Biden has spurred controversy through his back-to-back speeches that he delivered last week. In one speech held at a White House Hanukkah event, he explicitly repeated that he is a zionist and along with that, Biden added that the US will continue giving military support to Israel “until they get rid of Hamas.” The following day, during a speech held at a fundraising event, Biden made heads turn by making a statement unlike what is expected from the president. He stated that he believes Israel is starting to lose global support and that Benjamin Netanyahu must change his stance, as Israel’s “indiscriminate bombing” in Gaza may leave the country isolated.

So far, Biden has shown unwavering support for Israel since the start of the genocide on October 7. The support is showcased through his massive military assistance to Israel which ramped up ever since October 7. Back in November, Biden signaled that the US did not give Israel a deadline for its military campaign to end. Both Israel and the US do share a common goal of wanting to destroy Hamas and there was even a point in time when Biden clearly stated that “a ceasefire is not peace.”

Today, with his recent speech, beyond his claims of Zionism, there is a slight shift in his relationship with Netanyahu because of a growing difference between the two allies in terms of the continuation of the bombings. Yet, at the same time what has not changed is his adamance on attacking and ending Hamas. It is unclear what steps Israel will take following Biden’s latest speeches as well as how his relationship with Netanyahu will progress.
