For the Record: Here Are Your 2016 Grammy Nominees

Kendrick-Lamar-2014-Grammy-Awards

The nominations for the 58th Annual Grammy Awards were announced this week, and as usual there are a few surprises in store.

Kendrick Lamar is already a winner, receiving the most nominations this year: a whopping 11. The only other artist to ever score more nominations was Michael Jackson, who received 12 in 1984. Taylor Swift and The Weeknd came in second, with seven each. And the highest number of nominations for a non-performing artist goes to producer Max Martin, mostly for his work with Lamar and Swift.

Here are the nominees for the three biggest categories:

Album of the Year

Sound & Color by Alabama Shakes
To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
Traveller by Chris Stapleton
1989 by Taylor Swift
Beauty Behind the Madness by The Weeknd

Record of the Year

“Really Love” by D’Angelo and the Vanguard
“Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars
“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran
“Blank Space” by Taylor Swift
“Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd

Song of the Year

“Alright” by Kendrick Lamar
“Blank Space” by Taylor Swift
“Girl Crush” by Little Big Town
“See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa
“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

Meghan Trainor was among the Best New Artist nominees, which doesn’t really make any sense because she’s neither new nor best-adjacent. And anyway, she was nominated last year, albeit in other categories. The other musicians nominated for Best New Artist are Courtney Barnett, James Bay, Sam Hunt and Tori Kelly.

The biggest names to not get nominated this year are Beyoncé, Sam Smith and Adele, who didn’t receive any nominations because her single and album came out too late. Only songs released before October are eligible for the awards.

And although Drake was nominated multiple times, his most successful track this year “Hotline Bling” wasn’t event submitted for consideration due to an alleged “clerical error” by the record company.

Paul McCartney, who’s already got like 20 Grammys lying around, has been nominated again this year, but this time in an unexpected category — for Best Rap Song, for his work on Kanye West‘s “All Day”.

You can see the full list of nominees here. The Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on Feb. 15 in Los Angeles.
