Emirates Red Crescent to Set up Camp for Syrian Refugees in Greece

A Syrian woman cries while holding her children moments after arriving on a dinghy on the island of Lesbos, Greece August 23, 2015. Greece, mired in its worst economic crisis in generations, has been found largely unprepared for a mass influx of refugees, mainly Syrians. Arrivals have exceeded 160,000 this year, three times as high as in 2014. The crisis has exposed massive shortages in Greece's available facilities, but also striking discord within the European Union on how to handle the humanitarian crisis. The Emirates Red Crescent is set to build a camp for Syrian refugees in Greece. The authority said the necessary arrangements are under way to establish the camp as quickly as possible due to the plight of the refugees. The first phase of the camp, which will be in Larissa, will accommodate 2,000 people.

Orders to set up the camp were issued by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, with the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Abu-Dhabi’s Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE’s Armed Forces. The move aims to support and assist Syrian refugees in areas where they are currently located, as almost 50,000 refugees are currently stranded in Greece since most European countries closed their borders to them earlier this year.
