Egypt’s Al Ahly Basketball Team Wins The African Championship
Standing victorious within a brightly lit court were Egypt’s Al Ahly basketball team who won the 2023 Basketball Africa League (BAL) final after defeating Senegal’s AS Douanes with a score of 80-65. Throughout the competition, the team proved their mastery in the art of basketball after dominating the knockout stages, defeating Rwanda Energy Group with a 94-77 score in the quarter-finals as well as earning a 78-73 win against Stade Malien of Mali in the semi finals.
One player in particular stood out among the crowd, Al Ahly forward Anunwa “Nuni” Omot put on his A-game in every match especially during the final match where he lead the team to victory with 22 points. His excellent performance did not go unnoticed as he was awarded the 2023 BAL Most Valuable Player Award.
This is not the first time that an Egyptian team nabs the Basketball Africa League title as back in 2021, the Zamalek basketball team won the competition’s first ever trophy during the first season of BAL. The BAL began its journey in the region back in 2019; created by the NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as a way to expand the NBA beyond the US.
Following their win, the Al Ahly basketball team are now set to head to Singapore in September to take part in the International Cup.
