Egypt Mourns After Tragic Bus Accident Takes the Lives of 4 and Leaves 17 Injured
A microbus accident on Wednesday morning took the lives of two doctors, a driver, and a worker, leaving 17 others injured, according to the Ministry of Health. The accident took place when a team of doctors from El Minya was traveling to attend a training seminar in Cairo.
The doctors were told about the seminar less than 48 hours prior to it, and since the train is the ideal mode of transport from Minya to Cairo, the doctors requested postponing, especially as one of them was pregnant. After several attempts from the doctors, the Minya Health Directorate threatened that they would be penalized for their absence, indirectly forcing them to travel in a microbus that was not well-equipped.
Among those who were injured was the pregnant doctor, who had a miscarriage, lost her child, and lost the ability to conceive again.
Following the accident, the official Facebook page of Egypt’s Ministry of Health released a statement, which began by saying that the two health units where the two deceased doctors’ worked would be renamed in honor of the victims and that the parents of the deceased would be sent to perform Hajj.
People on social media were furious, as they expected a more stern response from the ministry than simply sending the families of the deceased to perform Hajj, especially since one of the doctors is a Christian.
